FIGHTING OF TROOPS OF THE 2ND UKRAINIAN FRONT DURING LIBERATION OF THE NORTHWESTERN AREAS OF MYKOLAIV REGION IN THE SPRING OF 1944

The article considers the participation of Soviet troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front of Soviet Union's Marshal Ivan Konev in the liberation of the north-western regions of the Mykolaiv region in the spring of 1944. It is found out which military units liberated the north-western districts of Mykolaiv region. Details of expulsion of German and Romanian invaders from the territory of the north-western areas of Mykolaiv region are revealed. The opinions and assessment of the participants of those events are covered. The source base on this issue is investigated. The author describes difficult conditions of spring off-road during the towns’ liberation in the north-western areas of the Mykolaiv region in the spring of 1944. The author also writes about the beginning, course and the end of the Uman-Botosani offensive operation in 1944. The Uman-Botoșani (or Uman-Botoshany) operation was a part of the Dnieper-Carpathian offensive, carried out by the Red Army in the western Ukrainian Soviet Republic against the German 8th Army of South Group in World War II. Led by Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev, it became one of the most successful Red Army operations of the whole war. In over a month of combat through the deep spring mud and numerous water barriers, the 2nd Ukrainian Front advanced over 300 kilometers (190 miles), cleared southwestern Ukraine, and entered Romania and Moldova. Local lore, memoirs, reference, archival literature on this problem are used and analyzed. It is concluded that this topic can be further studied on the basis of memoirs and archival sources, as well as articles from the military and local press.
