The article discusses the issue of speech development and vocabulary development of three-year-old children. The purpose of the article is to highlight the problem of creating proper conditions for the vocabulary development of three-year-old children within the means of small folklore pieces. An analysis of the scientific publications on the speech development of early years children was carried out, and the influence of small folklore genres on the development of the vocabulary of three-year-old children was characterized. The concept of «word» is defined. The views of prominent teachers Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi and Kostiantyn Ushynskyi regarding the importance of the artistic word for raising children are outlined.
It is clarified that the speech of a young child develops at a rapid pace in the following directions: understanding the speech of others; vocabulary mastery and its extension; improvement of phonetic speech; mastering the grammar structure of speech; development of dialogue skills. It has been found that folklore pieces contain immense opportunities for speech development, independence, cognitive activity, and the bright individuality of a child. Besides, it develops motivation and attention to the surrounding world, and moral values are formed.
