Abstract

The article delves into the life of the renowned twentieth-century poet, Paul Celan (Paul Anchel), born in Chernivtsi on November 23, 1920. The author discusses the significant role that Chernivtsi played in Celan's upbringing and the cultural environment that helped shape his worldview. The article sheds light on the events of Celan's life during the Second World War and the origins of his spiritual tragedy. It explores the poet's tragic worldview of himself, his fate, and the world following the war, which was heavily influenced by the horrors he and his family endured. The article also outlines Celan's life path after the war, including his time in Romania, Austria, and France, before ultimately settling in Paris. It provides information on his poetic and translation activities and tracks the recognition he received as the best German lyric poet of the twentieth century through various literary prizes and awards. The author analyzes how Celan's poetic achievements impacted his personality and his view of the present and the past. The article emphasizes Celan's dual relationship with modernity, driven by his inability to escape the traumas of his past, which ultimately resulted in a mental illness that destroyed the poet's personality. Despite his recognition as a poet, Celan could not escape the horrors of his past, and his behavior and attitude towards life became unbearable. His relationship with his family deteriorated, and he spent periods in psychiatric hospitals before finally succumbing to his illness and committing suicide on April 20, 1970, by jumping into the Seine from the Mirabeau bridge. The author interprets Paul Celan's tragic fate as the result of the «Wheel of History» and its impact on the destiny of an individual. Celan's life serves as a poignant reminder of how the trauma of world events can shape the course of an individual's life in unimaginable ways.
